She moans and digs her heel into my back. The sweetest taste greets me as I make quick work of bringing her to the edge but not letting her fall over just yet. We have all night to do this, so I’m going to take my time with her.
Besides, I want to hear her scream my name over and over again.
Work sucks today. I’m training two new nurses. Since everything happened, Sam quit working here and the higher ups gave me the head nurse job. She apologized to me every day for the two weeks that she kept working here. Then one day she just quit, and that was the last time anyone saw her. I think the only reason the higher ups gave me the job is because of everything that happened. I am sure people aren’t chomping at the bit to work in a place with psycho employees roaming the halls.
Emily, on the other hand, faced a handful of charges but just like Damian said, she got not guilty by reason of insanity. She will be in the psychiatric unit for a long time. Thankfully. She had a huge outburst in court and had to be sedated right in the room, that helped show how unstable she really is.
Sam had showed up to the trial to testify against Emily, but when Emily saw her she started screaming about her baby not loving her. It was wild, never saw anything like that before. I’ve seen lots of unstable people before, but this is probably one of the worst I have ever seen.
Allyn is off harassing the new nurses. He says it’s their initiation. Apparently when he was telling me dirty jokes that was my initiation. Hasn’t stopped either, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. I love that guy like a father. We’ve have had him over for dinner multiple times in the past few months.
“You ready to go, gorgeous?” a deep voice says behind me, instantly bringing a smile to my face.
“Yeah, I’m ready. Let’s blow this popsicle stand.” Gage chuckles at my corny joke. He walks up to me and kisses the tip of my nose. That’s his thing for me, he always kisses the tip of my nose before giving me a real kiss. Gage finally got his new leg and learned how to stand and walk on it. Since then, nothing can stop the man, he even has a blade leg coming soon so he can run.
As we’re walking towards the elevator, Gage stops me. I think something is wrong, so I turn around, only to see Gage down on one knee.
“You ok, do you need help getting up? Is it your prosthesis?”
“No, I’m fine. This is the place that I first saw you. You were working on that old man, down on the floor doing CPR. I was smitten then and I’m smitten now. We have been through some amazing ups and some incredible downs. But through it all, we stood by each other. You tell me that I’m your dragon slayer, the one who chases the bad things away, but you don’t realize that you are mine. You, Cori, are my dragon slayer. You are my hope and my future. So, will you do me the honor of marrying me?”
The tears are flowing, snot is probably running out of my nose, and when he pulls that ring out of his pocket I almost faint. The thing is huge!
“Well, you gonna let the boy get off his knees? He looks like a pansy down there!” Allyn, of course, has to throw his two cents in.
“Yes, of course, yes I will marry you.” Gage takes a second then gets up off his knees. He slips the ring on my finger, then picks me up and twirls me around. I’m giggling when I hear the clapping. When he finally stops and puts me down I turn to see all of my friends there. Olivia is holding baby Elle, who is so sweet I just want to eat her up. Damian is clapping, along with Jack and Kim. But what surprises me the most is seeing Martin there.
Martin retired shortly after everything happened. I took it hard, and we haven’t really talked much. So it’s shocking to see him here. I walk up and when I wrap my arms around him he jolts.
“Never thought I would ever get one of these from you.” Martin has tears in his eyes, I always knew he was a big softy.
“Thank you for being here. Thank you for being you.”
“I wouldn’t miss it. I’m surprised you’re hugging me. I like it.”
“Yeah, I’m all about the touchy-feely shit now.”
“Can I steal my fiancé away now? We’ve got places to go, things to do.” I elbow him in the ribs because he’s always looking for a way to make me go tomato faced.
But I wouldn’t want it any other way. It has been over a year now since the riot, and there isn’t a day I don’t think about it. Terrible things happened to a lot of people in that place; people lost their lives. The nightmares about that place happen every so often, but when Gage puts a hand on me, I calm instantly. Like I said before, he is my dragon slayer. He came along at just the right time when I needed him the most. Some of the journey I had to go through by myself before I was ready to accept someone else’s help. One thing that I realize now, though, is that I went out of that place battered and bruised. I was never broken.
The End.
Stay tuned for Kim’s book, Behind The Badge coming Summer 2016!
Will anybody be able to tame the fiery redhead?
Or better yet, will she want anybody to try?
To the person reading this, right now. THANK YOU! From the very tips of my toes to the top of my head is full with gratitude towards YOU!
To my momma, The Warden from Behind the Gate, thank you for telling me your stories and letting me twist them, I love you!
I would thank my kids, but I find it weird because this book has sex in it. But thanks anyways, kids!
To Cori and Dawn- the Queens- thank you ladies for being you for letting me bounce ideas good or bad off of y’all. For selling me Pink Zebra and Perfectly Posh (ha, I shamelessly plugged y’all. Happy now?)
To Dawn, Glenna, and Amanda- I am slowly working y’all into my books, why? Because y’all are mother fucking bosses!
Silla- yet again, I thank you. I am forever indebted to you and your awesome banner making abilities. Oh and people, she’s a pretty good editor, too. But don’t all run to her at once, because then she won’t have time for me.
To my dogs, Doodle and Turd Ferguson, thank you for giving me an actual excuse for being distracted.
To my bonus dad, Eddie, I know you are looking down, and I hope that you are proud. I will one day work into a story your saying of “you look like a sissy and your breath smells pissy.”
To my hubs, Boomer, you, my dear, are my dragon slayer, my reason for doing this, my everything. Thank you for pushing me with all of your might. Remember KM and MW sucks balls.
To CC- my mentor, my Mrs. Miyagi, thank you! Thank you for answering me night and day, for listening to my insecurities and helping me to know that it will be alright. Your advice and guidance has been amazing. I wish I could repay you, but hopefully my thanking you in a book is enough.
To all of the bloggers who have generously supported me through this journey- THANK YOU!
If you liked this story, please be kind and leave a review. Good or bad. Authors kind of rely on them.
Renee Adams is a 30 something author and former nurse. Before kids she was a champion sleeper, often sleeping at every opportunity. Now, she is a sleep deprived mother of 2 kids and 2 fur babies and wife to an amazing man. Which is also like having a third child. You can often find her trolling people on the internet, posting inappropriate memes that the Warden still call her about, and trying to one day achieve her dreams of meeting Jay Crownover. Stay tuned folks, she is just getting started. Welcome to the madness!
